History of Southpoint Minor Hockey
SouthpointMinor Hockey was formed with the amalgamation of the former Wheatleyand Leamington Minor Hockey Systems. Initial discussions were startedby Dick Segedin and Ralph Warkentin, who were the Presidents of theirrespective minor hockey systems during the 1992/1992 season. Followingthese initial discussions it was felt a committee should be formed todiscuss the feasibility of such a project.
Fourmembers from each minor hockey system comprised this committee. Numerous meetings were held and the group felt the two systems couldresolve any differences and recommended that a trial season takeplace. The committee discussed this proposal with the OMHA and weregiven permission to hold a trial season.
Next, the committee held meetings with the parents of each association toexplain their discussions and to hold votes for the parents' approvalof this endeavour. With the approval of both system's parents the newWheatley-Leamington Minor Hockey system was formed.
MaxRaffoul, Ralph Warkentin, Rick Feltz and Neil Quick from Leamington,Dick Segedin, Bill Recker, Mike Epplett and Pete Anthony from Wheatleywere members of the amalgamation committee during these initialmeetings.
Aftera successful 1993-1994 trial season a vote was held for the parents todecide if a permanent amalgamation would take place. The parentsdecided to amalgamate and so the "New Minor Hockey" was formed for the1994-1995 season.
Thework was not over. The new system did not have a name, a board, uniforms or a logo. A contest was held to name the new system and comeup with a new logo. The contest produced the new logo and the"Southpoint" Minor Hockey system was born.
Elections were held, uniforms were ordered and the new system was taking shape.
Aftera hectic summer the new system started the season utilizing both theLeamington (red) and Wheatley (blue) arenas. Southpoint was now onesystem with two arenas.
Thenew system was made of Major, Minor and AE teams in each age divisionalong with a strong house league system. Recently Southpoint has addedgirls travel and house league teams as well. Southpoint Minor Hockeyhas come a long way since the initial talks were held back in 1992. Our player membership has grown each year and our system is verycompetitive in all divisions of the Bluewater League, Girl's MichiganLeague and the local interlock league.
Southpoint Minor Hockey is proud of it's past and looking forward to the future.
