UPDATE FROM THE BOARD #1
This is an update to keep our membership informed on the amalgamation discussions that have taken place between Southpoint and other centres. There have been several meetings to date that have taken place with other centres to discuss the possibility of amalgamating the travel systems. These discussions have been very positive and productive. The reasons behind these talks have to do with the changing landscape of hockey in Ontario and what would offer the best solutions to the players, parents and the Association. To date, there has been no definite decision on an amalgamation, just discussion. As a matter of fact, the only decision that has been made to date is that the Associations involved have decided that for the 2012-2013 season, there will be no change. We will take our time, and proceed in a manner that assures attention to details and fairness for all involved.
We remind everybody that the amalgamation can only take place upon an appropriate vote by the membership of the Association, thus authorizing the amalgamation. The vote must be approved by a 2/3 majority for any proposed amalgamation to proceed.
These are challenging and exciting times for all minor hockey Associations. We will continue to meet and move forward with possible amalgamation discussions. The Board of Directors is committed to openly communicating information that will be forthcoming as a result of these meeting to the members. We ask that all members check the web site on a regular basis for future updates.
Yours In Hockey,
SMHA Board of Directors
UPDATE FROM THE BOARD # 2
There is an urgent need for Board Members. The Board is made up of 16 volunteers with eight people being elected every other year for a 2 year term. The elections take place in June at the Annual General Meeting. This coming year several of the existing volunteers have stated they will not be seeking re-election. These individuals have served on the board for several years, many no longer have children playing in the association. It is time for new ideas and fresh blood to come on board in order for Southpoint to continue to exist and thrive!
How often does the board meet?
The Board meets 2 times per month.
What does a Board member do?
Each Board member is assigned a specific set of duties. These duties range from assigning Timekeepers, Registrar, Ice Scheduler, Travel Director, Local League/House Director, Assistant Local League/ House Director. The Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President are all elected by the Board of Directors at the 1st meeting of the newly elected Board. There are other tasks that need to be done throughout the year such as helping at fundraising events, dances and other functions.
How much time is required?
Like any volunteer position depending on the duties assigned, it will vary. Certain responsibilities are more ongoing throughout the year while others are more concentrated at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year. Many of the hours you put in will be completing the tasks at home and then reporting back at a board meeting.
What happens if there are not enough Board Members?
Like any other volunteer organization if there are not enough volunteers to have a Board of Directors then there is no organization. The Board cannot set policy and guidelines without the required numbers of board members to hold a vote.
I have heard that if I serve on the Board my registration is free.
That is true. After one year as a board member you are eligible to receive your registration paid in full for the next season. This was done as an incentive to attract new volunteers to the board several years ago because people would not step up and serve on the board.
How do I get involved?
Attend the Annual General Meeting in June and get elected to serve on the Board. Contact any of the existing board members and ask questions as to what they do. This is your association, get involved before it’s too late. Make a difference!
